My childhood has long since gone away, and while I have lots of memories of my childhood, I am not really sure what my earliest would be, nor how or what to write about it. So, I am going to take this in a totally different direction. I am going to give you some of my earliest memories with each of my nieces and nephews, I feel it only appropriate to start with the youngest.
James Hughes Moore, I met James for the first time a few short weeks ago, Christmas Eve 2012, he was just a few weeks old at the time. I had the opportunity to hold him on my lap for awhile, get a few pictures, and he had a look of contentment on his face. While I only had a few hours with James, I know there will be plenty more in the span of his lifetime.
Joy Forever Moore, before Joy was even born, when Joel and Erin were living in Illinois, they were coming home for Christmas, Joel called and said travel was slow cause Erin wasn’t feeling good…Erin hadn’t told anyone she was pregnant yet…and I told them Erin didn’t feel good cause she was pregnant and it would be a girl. After Joy was born, Erin, Sarah, Mom, Joy and I went shopping in Ironwood. As we walked the stores, I allowed them to shop while I carried Joy around. She was just such a cheerful baby. After awhile, Joy started to fuss, so Sarah took her to try to calm her. As soon as Sarah had her, Joy started filling her diaper, believe me, everyone in the store heard her filling her diaper.Within a few minutes we were back to the Suburban so Erin could change Joy.Erin told us as she was changing Joy that not only did Joy overflow her diaper, she managed to make it into her socks too…Joel must have been proud. But in all seriousness, I figure Joy loved her Uncle Donuts so much that she started fussing so she wouldn’t poop on me…I am forever grateful Joy…I owe you one.
Daniel Louis Twining, I like to say he’s named after me, but the truth is, I am pretty sure he’s named after a different relative of his. One of my first memories of Daniel was when I was getting ready to open the Cafe in Marquette(or rather Harvey). Tim, Maggie, and Daniel came out to see it and take pictures, I put on a uniform, tall Chef hat and all, put a Chef hat on Daniel, and Maggie took some pictures. My favorite one was us standing by the side of the building, right in front of the famous sign with my distorted face coming thru the hole of a giant donut…no, I am NOT making the sign up, it really existed.
Clayton Samuel Houston Horsley, first thing I remember is his name, yes it is his real name, yes his dad was from Texas. One summer, when Clayton was about 7 months old, he and his siblings were spending the summer with Grandma Moore. One day after work, I was playing with Clayton, holding him up in the air above my head talking to him as he laughed. Grandma came in and said “you may want to be careful, he just ate”…Grandma didn’t even get the whole statement out and Clayton had threw up on me…or better yet, IN MY MOUTH! I am not sure what baby formula tastes like going down, but I DO know what it tastes like after being thrown up.
Amber Nicole Grace Horsley, my first memories of Amber “Gracie” are the summer of 1997, she turned two that summer. I spent the summer with Rodger helping with the kids while Kristin was in Germany. Some nights Amber would wake up screaming, and almost nothing would calm her. Finally I figured out, if I sang the “Winnie The Pooh” song while scratching her back, she would calm right down and go back to sleep. Not sure why it worked, but it worked every time.
Mikayla Michelle Marie Horsley, another double middle name, Kristin and Rodger did a lot of that…I really like the double middle names, they just sound so great. The summer of 1997, Mikayla turned two that summer. She was so talkative, so energetic, so lively, so…Mikayla. One night while getting the kids ready for bed, Mikayla was being quiet, Rodger was getting the kids a bath, I was on dry, diaper, and pajama duty. Rodger brought Mikayla out wrapped in a towel, asking her what was wrong, Mikayla just shook her head, Rodger asked her if she wasn’t feeling good, she shook her head NO. As he turned her to face me, and started to hand her to me, Mikayla threw up on me, so Rodger turned her back around to face him, so I could clean up, and she threw up on him. Guess puking on your uncle runs in the family…lol. In all seriousness, while I remember this story the best, so many wonderful memories I had that summer. And while I am usually a social puker(you puke, I puke), Mikayla was/is the one person I will NEVER puke on.
Colton E. Austin Horsley, my very first memory of Colton was Kristin calling me from Okinawa, Japan telling me I had a new nephew. I first met Colton around April of 1994, he was roughly 7 months old.Such a well behaved kid. I remember him falling and hitting his head on Grandma’s coffee table. I don’t remember much else from that visit, but I have great memories of 1997 when he was 3, almost 4. He would watch “The Land Before Time” movie over and over and over again. While watching he would sing along and dance in his underwear telling us he was “A Sharp Tooth” while trying to make his arms look shorter and rising up on the front of his feet. It didn’t take me long to memorize the whole movie…lol.
Hannah Lynne Shaw, when I first met Hannah, I didn’t even know she was my niece, but I KNEW there was always going to be a special connection and she would always be a part of my life and family. It wasn’t until around 15 years later that I found out indeed she was my niece, my own flesh and blood. When she was a young child, I would go over to the Shaw’s house now and then, I would read Hannah books. I always admired her long curly hair.Hannah always had a very full full full head of beautiful curly hair. Naturally beautiful curly hair.
Well, that covers them all. I have so many more wonderful memories with all of them, and I love them all SO SO SO much, and I am more proud of each and every one of them than anyone could ever imagine.
All my nieces and nephews will hold special places in my heart, I would do anything for any one of them.
